The Israeli Political System: So Far, the Exception that Proves the Rule
Keywords:
Israel, political systems, secularization, electoral regime, political fragmentationAbstract
Applying the model of comparative analysis proposed by Almond and Powell to measure the development of different political systems, emphasis is made on two variables: secularization and political fragmentation. The article argues, first, that despite showing a high degree of secularization the Israeli political system allows, through the electoral system, religion to play a major role in everyday life. Secondly, that despite Israel shows a high political fragmentation, until the 1996 elections the political system has been highly stable, constituting this case an exception to the rule elaborated by Almond and Powell. The conclusions allow to confirm both hypotheses.
